Holen

A Filipino marble game where players hit other marbles out of a circle or into a hole using their own.

Players
• At least 2 players, but more makes it more exciting!
• Can be played one-on-one or in small groups.

Marbles (Holen)
• Each player needs at least one marble to start.
• It’s best if every player has a few extra marbles for later rounds.
• Choose sturdy, glass marbles that roll smoothly on the ground.

Playing Area
• A flat, smooth surface like soil, sand, or concrete.
• Best played outdoors — in yards, school grounds, or empty lots.

Chalk or Stick (Optional)
• To draw a circle or mark boundaries on the ground.

1. Draw the Circle
• Use chalk or a stick to draw a medium circle on the ground (about 2–3 feet wide).
• This will be the playing area or arena.

2. Place the Marbles
• Each player puts one or more marbles inside the circle — these are the targets.

3. Decide Who Goes First
• Players can flick a marble toward the circle; the closest one to the center goes first.
• Or use any quick method like “rock-paper-scissors".

4. Choose Your Spot
• Players crouch or kneel a few feet outside the circle.
• The first shooter holds their main marble (the one they’ll use to shoot).

1. Flick the Marble
• Hold your marble between your thumb and forefinger.
• Rest your hand on the ground and flick it with your thumb toward the circle.

2. Aim for the Target
• Try to hit the marbles inside the circle to knock them out.
• Any marbles that roll out become yours to keep!

3. Take Turns
• Players take turns shooting one at a time.
• If you successfully knock out a marble, you shoot again.

4. Stay in the Circle
• If your shooting marble stays inside the circle after your turn, you must shoot from that spot next round.
• Be careful not to let your marble get knocked out by others!

Alternate Versions
• Knock-Out Game: Players try to hit and knock out opponents’ marbles.
• Target Game: Players roll their marbles into a hole or through a small hoop — the closest or first one in wins.

5. Winning the Game
• The player who collects the most marbles at the end wins.
• In friendly play, you can return the marbles after the game (so everyone keeps their own).

  • Holen (HOH-len) — marble (from “hole-in”)
  • Pitik (pee-TIK) — flick
