Indigenous Spiritual Practices
Long ago, before big religions arrived, Filipinos believed that nature was full of spirits. They thought mountains, rivers, and trees had guardians who needed respect. Families prayed to these spirits for protection, good harvests, and health.
• Babaylan: A wise woman (sometimes a man) who acted as healer, leader, and guide in the community.
• Offerings: People left food, flowers, or coins to keep spirits happy.
• Fun Fact: Even today, some Filipinos still say “Tabi-tabi po” (Excuse me!) near anthills or forests to show respect to unseen spirits.
