Tagbanwa Script

Tagbanwa is traditionally used by the Tagbanwa people of Palawan, particularly in central and northern parts of the island. It is one of the few surviving pre-colonial Philippine scripts.

Tagbanwa is an abugida, meaning each character represents a consonant with a built-in “A” vowel sound. Small marks called kudlit are added to change the vowel to “I” or “U.”

Historically, Tagbanwa writing was carved onto bamboo or written on leaves and bark. It was used for personal letters, poetry, and documenting rituals.

Unlike some other Mangyan scripts, Tagbanwa is typically written horizontally from left to right.

💡 Fun Fact: Tagbanwa script is part of the Philippine Paleographs recognized by UNESCO in 1999 as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
